My name is Karan Brar and I’m with the Office of State Senator Steven Choi.
Recently you emailed the Senator regarding the issue of Korean military Veterans who served alongside the United States military during the Vietnam War and are now US citizens and residents of California.
I just wanted to let you know that our Office submitted a request to Legislative Counsel for language that would provide the same rights, benefits, recognition, and privileges afforded to Veterans of the United States Military to Veterans of the Korean Armed Forces that meet all the following criteria:
• Resident of California who is an eligible veteran of the Korean Armed Forces.
• Duly naturalized citizen of the United States.
• Recognized by the US Department of Veterans Affairs under 38 U.S.C. § 109 (relating to benefits for discharged members of allied forces).
It will take a few weeks for Legislative Counsel get back to us with the bill language but once they do, I was hoping to set up a meeting with your organization, the Korean American Vietnam War Veterans’ Association S.W. Region, so we can discuss this bill and how we can move forward with ensuring that all California Korean Veterans of the Vietnam War get the respect and support they deserve.

저희 사무실에서는 다음과 같은 기준을 모두 충족하는 한국군 참전용사들에게 미군 참전용사들과 동일한 권리, 혜택, 인정 및 특권을 부여하는 법안 초안 작성을 위해 입법고문실에 요청서를 제출했음을 알려드립니다.
• 캘리포니아 거주자이며 한국군 참전용사 자격이 있는 분
• 정식으로 미국 시민권을 취득한 분
• 미국 보훈부(38 U.S.C. § 109, 동맹국 군대 제대자에 대한 혜택 관련 조항)에서 인정받은 분
입법고문실에서 법안 초안을 보내주기까지 몇 주 정도 소요될 예정입니다. 초안이 완성되면 귀 단체인 한국계 미국인 베트남 전쟁 참전용사 협회 남서부 지부와 회의를 갖고 이 법안에 대해 논의하고, 캘리포니아에 거주하는 모든 한국계 베트남 전쟁 참전용사들이 마땅히 받아야 할 존경과 지원을 받을 수 있도록 앞으로 어떻게 진행해야 할지 논의하고 싶습니다.
